Day 4: "Control Your Search and Your Time"

Have you ever spent hours on search engines looking for information? Do you want to learn quick commands to speed up your search? Running a successful Internet campaign is time consuming but with these 7 helpful codes you can search faster and waste less time.

1. Exact Match: Look for exactly what you are searching for by placing the search term in parenthesis.

2. Keywords: Search for specific keywords within a website.  This is helpful when comparing your competitors to your website and it also helps you to write more keyword rich content.  For an exact match put the search term in parenthesis. For example: “Internet marketing”

3. File Format: Looking for specific file formats is helpful when gathering resources.  If you need a specific file type you can specify pdf, xls, doc, ppt, txt just to name a few. For example:

Healthy foods filetype: pdf

4. Excluding Words: You many want to exclude words from your search when searching niche market terms.  For examples PIPEs in the financial word means private investment in public equity.  However, if you were to enter PIPES into a search engine the most common result would populate with plumbing terms.  Using the excluded command with a keyword helps narrow the search results. For example:

PIPES -plumbing "finance"

5. Wild Card: This command is helpful when looking for an unknown variable.  You can use this command while building your Internet marketing campaign by looking for commonly used words, phrases, or expressions. For instance, if you have keywords and need additional keyword ideas to included you can use this command.

"Internet marketing" "web marketing" “* marketing” (our examples yields the results online and affiliate)

6. Local Search: This command lets you look at a search based on location.  Normally, when you enter a term in the search field, your results populate based on relevance and location.  However, you can customize your local search to any location. 7. Backlinks: Check your backlinks (also called inbound links).  Backlinks are the number of sites linking to your content.   Go to any search engine and check to see which websites are linking to your content.
